What it is
Fort Triumph is a 2020 turn-based tactics game set in a fantasy world, made by CookieByte Entertainment after a period in early access. A party of heroes travels across an overworld map, recruits, gathers resources and builds up a town, and fights battles on grids with cover in the XCOM style.
Its distinguishing feature is physics. Heroes can kick enemies into walls and each other, knock trees down onto them, and use the map as a weapon. The overworld part of the game is closer to fantasy strategy games, with heroes moving across a map and towns to develop.
Why play it
The physics gives battles a sense of play that many tactics games lack. A turn where you knock an enemy into another and both fall into a trap is satisfying in a way pure shooting is not, and the tone is light and comic.
It is a smaller game than the ones it borrows from. The overworld is shallow next to dedicated strategy games, and some found the late game repetitive.
Next to X-COM: UFO Defense
Fort Triumph takes the XCOM reboot's battle rules and moves them to a fantasy setting with physics. It shows how easily the X-COM pattern travels between genres: a small squad, cover, and a campaign around it work with swords as well as with rifles.
