What it is

Mordheim is a 2015 turn-based tactics game set in the Warhammer fantasy world, adapted from Games Workshop's skirmish game of the same name. A comet has destroyed the city of Mordheim, and warbands of mercenaries, cultists, Skaven and religious sisters search its ruins for the shards it left behind.

You build and manage a warband of individual fighters. Battles are turn-based but, when moving, you control a single fighter from behind their shoulder, through streets and over rooftops. After each battle, wounded fighters roll for their injuries: they may recover, lose an eye, lose a leg, or die.

Why play it

Its injuries are what people remember: a favourite fighter who comes back from a battle with a missing hand and a lasting fear. The warband grows, ages and breaks over a campaign, and that story is the game.

It is slow, hard and unforgiving. Battles can drag as fighters search for each other in the ruins, and the interface is dense.

Next to Jagged Alliance 2

Mordheim shares Jagged Alliance 2's attachment to individuals and its money worries: the warband has rent to pay. Its lasting injuries go further than anything in Jagged Alliance 2, where a wound heals. Here a fighter is changed by what happened to them.

Dead Media is making RAD Tactics, a squad tactics game for PC played in real time with pause, set after the end of the world. It is in development.
