What it is
ATOM RPG is a 2018 role-playing game from the independent studio Atom Team, set in the Soviet Union after an alternate nuclear war in 1986. You play an agent of a secret organisation called ATOM, sent to find a missing expedition.
It is openly modelled on the first two Fallout games: the interface, the colours, the turn-based combat with action points, and an open world with towns and choices. It was made in the Unity engine. A follow-up, Trudograd, was released in 2021.
Why play it
It is the most faithful modern Fallout-like, and its Soviet setting gives it a character of its own: collective farms, military bunkers and dark jokes. It is large and generous with things to do.
Its writing and translation can be uneven, and its combat is no deeper than the old Fallout games'.
Next to Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel
ATOM RPG shares Fallout Tactics' Fallout roots, a nuclear wasteland with turn-based action points. It has companions but not a squad of the Fallout Tactics kind.
