What it is

Mutant Year Zero is a 2018 tactics game from the Swedish studio The Bearded Ladies, based on the Swedish tabletop role-playing game of the same name. After humanity's collapse, mutants scavenge the Zone for an outpost called the Ark. You command a squad of three: Bormin, a boar, Dux, a duck, and others who join later.

Exploration is in real time and stealthy: you scout, set up an ambush and pick off isolated enemies quietly. When the fight starts, the game switches to turn-based combat in the style of the XCOM reboot, with cover and two actions per turn.

Why play it

Its stealth in real time before turn-based fights is a clever combination, and its world is beautiful and melancholy. The characters are funny and well written.

It has no permadeath and its strategic layer is limited. It is short. Its stealth works best against isolated groups, which makes some fights feel solved.

Next to Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel

Mutant Year Zero shares Fallout Tactics' post-apocalyptic world and its squad, and it switches clocks like Fallout Tactics, though only between exploration and combat. It is one of the best modern squad games set after the end of the world.

Dead Media is making RAD Tactics, a squad tactics game for PC played in real time with pause, set after the end of the world. It is in development.
