What it is
Daemonhunters is a 2022 turn-based tactics game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, sharing a name with the 1998 Chaos Gate. You command the Grey Knights, an elite order of Space Marines, against a plague called the Bloom, spread by the Chaos god of decay. Your base is a warship that travels between infected planets.
Battles are turn-based with action points, with Warhammer additions: hits can leave lasting wounds that lower an enemy's maximum health, and warp surges change the battlefield as a fight goes on. Between missions you manage the ship, research, and a campaign map where the plague spreads and must be contained.
Why play it
It is one of the best modern games built on the XCOM model, and one of the best Warhammer games. The Grey Knights are powerful but few, so each one's loss or wound matters, and the campaign's plague gives it urgency without a hard mission timer.
The strategic layer can feel like a list of chores, and the enemy roster is narrow early on. It rewards players who already like the setting.
Next to X-COM: UFO Defense
Daemonhunters keeps both of X-COM's layers in the modern form Firaxis gave them, and puts elite soldiers in place of rookies. It is to the reboot what Chaos Gate was to the original: the same structure, with a squad that starts strong and runs out.
