What it is
Fallout 2 is the 1998 sequel to Fallout, made by Interplay's Black Isle Studios. Eighty years after the first game, the hero's village, Arroyo, is dying, and its chosen one is sent to find a Garden of Eden Creation Kit, a device that can make the land fertile. The search leads across a larger West Coast and towards the remnant of the pre-war government.
It keeps Fallout's SPECIAL system, its turn-based combat with action points, and its open structure, and enlarges everything: more towns, more companions, more choices, a car to drive between places.
Why play it
Many players consider it the best of the series. Its world is enormous and full of things to discover, its choices are many, and its humour is broader than the first game's, sometimes too broad for those who liked the first game's restraint.
Its opening is slow and its interface the same as Fallout's. Its bugs at release were many, and community patches are widely used.
Next to Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel
Fallout 2 is the world Fallout Tactics was set beside. Its companions are a step towards a squad, but they are controlled by the computer in combat. Fallout Tactics took the next step and gave every member of the squad to the player.
