What it is

The Fall: Last Days of Gaia is a 2004 role-playing game from the German studio Silver Style Entertainment, published by Deep Silver. It is set in the American Southwest after an ecological catastrophe, where you lead a group trying to survive between rival factions.

Its party combat runs in real time. You can pause at any moment to give orders, and set the game to pause itself under certain conditions, and the speed of battle can be adjusted with a slider. Its developers said they favoured this over turns because fully turn-based play was too slow for the game they wanted.

Why play it

It is one of the few post-apocalyptic role-playing games of its era with a party in real time with pause, and its world is large and full of choices. Players who wanted a 3D Fallout with a squad found something close here.

It was released with many bugs, and its patched version is much better than what shipped.

Next to Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel

The Fall shares Fallout Tactics' post-apocalyptic setting, its squad and its choice of clock. Its pausable real time is the same answer Fallout Tactics gave with its continuous mode, inside a larger role-playing game.

Dead Media is making RAD Tactics, a squad tactics game for PC played in real time with pause, set after the end of the world. It is in development.
