What it is

Encased is a 2021 role-playing game from the Russian studio Dark Crystal Games, published by Prime Matter. It is set in an alternate 1970s, inside a huge dome found in a desert, where a corporation sends people to research what it contains. Something goes wrong, and the zone inside the dome becomes a wasteland.

It is inspired by Fallout and Wasteland and by the Soviet novel Roadside Picnic. You join one of the corporation's wings, explore, make choices and fight in turn-based combat with action points and a party of companions. It was in early access from 2019 and released in full in September 2021.

Why play it

Its setting, a scientific expedition gone wrong under an alien dome, is original, and its 1970s look is distinctive. Its turn-based fights and open structure suit fans of the classic Fallout games.

Its writing and pacing are uneven, and its late game is weaker than its start.

Next to Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel

Encased shares Fallout Tactics' roots in Fallout, turn-based action points and a world gone wrong, and moves the catastrophe from a nuclear war to a scientific one.

Dead Media is making RAD Tactics, a squad tactics game for PC played in real time with pause, set after the end of the world. It is in development.
