What it is
Expeditions: Rome is a 2022 tactical role-playing game from the Danish studio Logic Artists, the third in its Expeditions series after Conquistador and Viking. You play a young Roman legate sent to put down a Greek rebellion, and the war takes you on across the Mediterranean.
It combines turn-based battles with a party of companions and soldiers, exploration and choices in conversation, and the management of a legion that fights its own battles on a campaign map. Characters level up and are equipped, and choices shape the story.
Why play it
Its battles are well made, with a varied cast of classes and maps that reward thought, and its Roman setting is uncommon in games. The legion layer adds a strategic dimension most role-playing games lack.
Its story is long and its legion battles are abstract. It is a role-playing game with tactics at its centre rather than a pure tactics game.
Next to Jagged Alliance 2
Expeditions: Rome shares Jagged Alliance 2's mix of a squad you know by name and a war that moves across a map. Its companions talk and argue like Jagged Alliance 2's mercenaries, with more story and less freedom.
