What it is
Jagged Alliance 3 is the 2023 sequel to Jagged Alliance 2, made by the Bulgarian studio Haemimont Games. The president of Grand Chien, a fictional African country, has been kidnapped by a paramilitary force, and his daughter hires you to bring him back.
It keeps the series' structure: hire mercenaries, many of them the familiar faces from the earlier games, and take back the country sector by sector. Exploration runs in real time and combat switches to turns. Mines pay for the war, militia hold what you have taken, and the mercenaries talk, argue and bond.
Why play it
It is the first true sequel since 1999, and reviewers and players largely agreed it was faithful. The mercenaries' banter is back, the country is large and varied, and the combat is a clean modern version of the series' turn-based fight.
Fans of the 1.13 mod for Jagged Alliance 2 found its combat simpler, with fewer interrupts and a smaller arsenal. It is a sequel for the series' heart rather than its spreadsheet.
Next to Jagged Alliance 2
Jagged Alliance 3 keeps nearly all of Jagged Alliance 2: the cast, the map of sectors, the mines, the militia and the jokes. It is the place to go after Jagged Alliance 2 if you want the same game made today.
