What it is
Wasteland 2 is a 2014 role-playing game from inXile Entertainment, the studio of Brian Fargo, who produced the first Wasteland. It was one of the first large games funded on Kickstarter, in 2012. You create a squad of four Desert Rangers and investigate the murder of a ranger in the Arizona desert, later moving to Los Angeles.
It is a squad role-playing game: four rangers you create, joined by companions, each with skills that open different solutions, and turn-based combat with action points and cover. Choices are many and often have no good answer. A Director's Cut in 2015 added perks and improved the combat.
Why play it
It is the return of the original post-apocalyptic squad role-playing game, made by its creators, and it captures the dark humour and hard choices of the classic games. Its early choice between saving one of two places sets the tone.
Its combat is plain and its interface can be clumsy. Its sequel, Wasteland 3, improved both.
Next to Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel
Wasteland 2 shares Fallout Tactics' squad in a nuclear wasteland and its turn-based action points. It is a role-playing game where Fallout Tactics is a tactics game, but its squad of four created characters brings it closer to Fallout Tactics than the Fallout role-playing games are.
