What it is

The Age of Decadence is a 2015 role-playing game from Iron Tower Studio. It is set long after a catastrophic war in a world that resembles the late Roman empire, where great houses compete for the ruins of a lost civilisation. You play a single character who can be a merchant, a thief, a mercenary, a scholar or others.

Combat is turn-based with action points and is very hard. Many problems can be solved by talking, and many characters are not built for fighting at all. The game is built around choices, and different characters can see very different stories.

Why play it

It is one of the most reactive role-playing games ever made: choices change who rules, what you can do and who lives. Its combat is unforgiving, and it respects a player who wants to avoid fighting.

It is famously hard and has no party. Its look is modest.

Next to Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel

The Age of Decadence shares Fallout Tactics' roots in Fallout's turn-based role-playing and its world after collapse. Its fallen empire is a different kind of post-apocalypse, an ancient one, and its focus is choice rather than squads.

Dead Media is making RAD Tactics, a squad tactics game for PC played in real time with pause, set after the end of the world. It is in development.
